What are the advantages of breast augmentation?
September 29, 2020
Whether it’s to address a developmental condition, or to provide a much-needed confidence boost after having a family, choosing to undertake plastic surgery is always a big decision.
At Hamilton House Plastic Surgery Adelaide, we perform numerous types of breast surgery, including breast lift, breast reduction, breast implant removal, and one of our most common procedures, is breast augmentation for women wanting to improve the size and appearance of their breasts.
What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation, or breast enlargement, is a cosmetic procedure using silicone or saline implants to add volume and shape to your bust line. This helps create a more youthful, fuller and more womanly appearance.
There are numerous reasons women choose breast augmentation, including:
- You may have a flat chest with underdeveloped breasts
- You have small breasts disproportion to your chest frame
- Your desire for a firmer, fuller bust line
- Improvement of your breast shape and to look good in an outfit without a bra or bra padding
- Your breast size decreased dramatically following pregnancy and breast feeding
- Breast drooping or sagging with age or from just natural gravity effects
Breast implants are available in a range of sizes and shapes. So whether you want a subtle breast enlargement or a more dramatic result, Dr Richard Hamilton is here for you and he can help you achieve your desired look.
What are the advantages?
Many women feel self-conscious about the shape or size of their breasts.
One of the main advantages of breast augmentation is a fuller, firmer chest, adding volume and curves.
Breast augmentation helps women with underdeveloped breasts achieve the size they want, providing a more well-proportioned figure.
Most women with small breasts experience difficulty in finding well-fitting clothes, bras and swimwear that they feel comfortable in. Breast augmentation can give you many options and allow you to wear the clothes that you choose and which will enhance your appearance.
Ageing, breastfeeding and weight loss can result in sag and decreased volume of your breasts. A Breast Augmentation can restore them to a more firm and youthful appearance.
This procedure can also provide benefits outside of physical appearance. For women who are unhappy with their breasts, breast augmentation can give increased confidence and help them feel more comfortable in swimwear or in their own skin. This can offer a significant positive impact on many women’s lives.
Breast augmentation or reconstruction is also a common procedure for women who have gone through breast cancer or had a mastectomy, and to help them feel like themselves again.
Make sure it’s the right choice for you
Before undergoing a cosmetic procedure such as breast augmentation, it’s important for you to research what is involved and to better understand the benefits, risks and potential outcomes.
What are the risks?
With any surgical procedure there are potential risks and complications.
With breast augmentation the risks are uncommon but can include:
- Capsular Contracture
- Loss of Nipple Sensation
- Implant Rupture
- Breast Implant Illness
- Atypical Large Cell Lymphoma ALCL
- Implant rejection
- Implant rotation
Dr Hamilton will spend more than an hour with you at the initial consultation and he will address the risks and potential complications in detail
Speak to an experienced plastic surgeon such as Dr Richard Hamilton to discuss your reasons for surgery and what you’re hoping to achieve. This will ensure you receive information about the realistic results you can expect and Dr Hamilton will take the time to explain everything and help you achieve your goals.
Also Dr Hamilton will conduct Vectra 3D Imaging. A 3D image is captured on a special device and it can then be modified to simulate the results you may achieve with a breast augmentation operation. This is amazing technology, rarely available in Adelaide, gives you the opportunity to have your own input into the operation, taking away much of the guess work.
How much does it cost?
The cost of breast augmentation differs from patient to patient due to the varying degrees of difficulty and complexity of the procedure. What type of implant you choose will also alter the cost, as will the need for any ancillary procedures such a breast lift.
During and after the extensive consultation with plastic surgeon Dr Richard Hamilton which takes over one hour, his staff will provide costings on the procedure, the implants used and the Day Surgery costs. They can also give some guidance on anaesthesia fees although this will be confirmed by the anaesthetic group at the time of booking.
Unfortunately there is no Medicare or Private Health Insurance rebates available for breast augmentation, so a GP referral is not required.
How long is Recovery?
Recovery from breast augmentation is dependant upon the complexity of the procedure, but generally it is remarkably quick and there are only a few days downtime. Placement of the implant in front of the muscle generally leads to a speedier recovery and is considerably less painful than behind the muscle so we normally recommend placement in front of the muscle. Pain is readily controlled by oral medication.
Showering is possible on the second post operative day and by then you will be able to look after yourself. We recommend keeping the supporting tape on the whole breast for 10 days when the dissolving sutures are trimmed. Then the stich line should be taped for 6 weeks under a sports bra.
A gradual increase in physical activity is recommended beginning with short walks and buoilding up to gym work at 6 weeks.
Dr Hamilton will be seeing you regularly in the first few weeks after surgery – almost daily – to monitor your progress and to ensure the healing process occurs smoothly.
