Mons Pubis Reduction, also known as Monsplasty, is a procedure designed to contour and reduce excessive fullness in the pubic area, often referred to as FUPA (Full Upper Pubic Area).
As people age, or following events like pregnancy, the mons pubis (the fatty area above the genitals) can begin to descend, causing an increase in fullness or sagging.
For some, this may also be a result of genetic factors, where fat accumulates in this area and does not respond to dieting. This excess fullness can detract from one’s appearance, cause discomfort, and hinder the ability to wear tailored clothing or swimwear comfortably.
Hamilton House offers specialised monsplasty procedures for individuals experiencing fullness or sagging in the mons pubis region. Under Dr. Richard Hamilton’s care, patients can achieve a more contoured and youthful appearance.
Mons Pubis Reduction surgery is a body contouring procedure performed on adults to reduce the prominence and bulk of the mons pubis area, recontouring the area for a more aesthetic and youthful appearance.
The surgery is suitable for individuals with a prominent mons pubis, whether due to genetics, medical conditions, or the natural ageing process. In some cases, the mons pubis may droop, a condition referred to as mons pubis ptosis.
Initial Consultation:
During your first consultation, Dr. Richard Hamilton will assess your condition, discuss the procedure, and explain the surgical technique, recovery time, risks, and associated costs. The consultation typically lasts up to an hour. Photos may be taken, and detailed information about the surgery will be provided, including anaesthesia costs.
Second Consultation:
After reviewing the information from the initial consultation and considering the available options, you may decide to proceed with surgery. If so, a second consultation will be scheduled with Dr. Hamilton, where you will also meet with our Patient Advisor and Practice Nurse to go over necessary documentation and pre- and post-operative care instructions.
Seven days following the second consultation, surgery can be scheduled, and payment arrangements may be made. For safety reasons, Mons Pubis Reduction surgery is generally performed on its own, although it may be combined with an abdominoplasty in some cases. However, Dr. Hamilton does not perform this procedure for patients with significant weight loss who may require a hospital stay.
Mons Pubis Reduction surgery is typically performed under intravenous sedation or general anaesthesia at Hamilton House Day Surgery, with an anaesthetist present to administer sedation.
An incision is made just above the pubic prominence in a natural skin crease. The incision length varies depending on the severity of the condition. Dr. Hamilton carefully determines the amount of skin and fat that can be safely removed—usually about 2–3 cm, but in some cases, more may be removed. It is important not to over-reduce the area, as this could lead to an unnatural appearance.
Liposuction is often used in conjunction with skin and fat removal to achieve a more balanced and contoured appearance. In some cases, liposuction alone is used when the prominence is modest and the skin has sufficient elasticity to accommodate the change.
Dr. Hamilton has over 20 years of experience and makes sound judgments about incision placement to ensure the scar is well-concealed and natural. The incision is made down to the rectus muscle, and the skin is carefully lifted off the muscle and pubic bone. Deep sutures are then placed to lift the area, followed by fine sutures to close the skin. In some cases, a drain is placed to prevent fluid accumulation.
Patients typically recover quickly and are discharged from Hamilton House within an hour of surgery, in the care of a friend or family member. Because the pubic area is numb following surgery, it is crucial to avoid applying hot water bottles or packs for 24 hours. Ice packs are recommended to reduce swelling and bruising.
Dr. Hamilton will see you the day after surgery to remove the drain, and again 2 days later. Once the wound has sealed and sensation returns, patients can resume normal showering and hygiene.
Sutures are removed 10 days after surgery. Dr. Hamilton recommends using micropore tape to minimize scar stretching during the first 6 weeks of healing.
Most patients are pleased with the results of Mons Pubis Reduction surgery, as it provides a significant improvement in the appearance of the pubic area, allowing for greater comfort in clothing. Results become more apparent once swelling and bruising have resolved.
After about 6 months, the scarring matures and lightens, blending seamlessly into the natural skin crease. Dr. Hamilton’s expertise ensures that the scar is discreet and as well-concealed as it can be.
