Breast Lift Overview

Patients can achieve firmer, more contoured breasts by undergoing a breast lift (mastopexy) at our Adelaide Plastic Surgery practice in South Australia. Women whose breasts have started to droop or sag, following pregnancy or weight loss can experience vast improvement with the help of this procedure. Breast sagginess or droopiness can be caused by a number of factors, including:

  • Weight loss
  • Weight gain
  • Pregnancy
  • Nursing / Breast Feeding
  • The natural ageing process

A breast lift can make breasts firmer in appearance by literally lifting the breasts and tightening the skin envelope. Dr. Hamilton uses the vertical method of Mastopexy to ensure shorter, less visible scars.

A breast lift is a complex procedure and during the consultation Dr Hamilton will carefully assess your breasts and work out what strategy will best suit your physical circumstances. If only a modest lift is required sometimes a breast implant alone will give sufficient lift perhaps combined with internal lifting sutures. Here the scarring is minimal. Most frequently however where there is greater breast sag with surplus skin, a formal breast lift or Mastopexy is required with or without an implant. Where possible Dr Hamilton uses the latest Vectra 3D technology to simulate the result of a Breast Lift with or without implants and this is a great tool in patient education and also it greatly assists Dr Hamilton in planning your procedure with precision.

The Breast Lift Procedure

A breast lift mastopexy performed at our Adelaide surgery centre in South Australia begins with very careful planning by our highly skilled cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Hamilton. Under general anaesthesia or intravenous sedation, an incision made along the natural contour of the breast, to remove excess breast tissue and skin, then the breast glandular tissue is lifted and sculptured. Nipples are repositioned and the breast reshaped, creating a higher, firmer, perkier bust line. Breast implants can also be placed during the breast lift procedure at our Adelaide surgery centre for patients who desire larger breasts along with a firmer bust line. A breast lift is generally performed as a day surgery procedure and takes about two to three hours to complete.

Recovery after Breast Lift

In the days following the procedure, most patients experience some minor discomfort, including bruising and swelling, which usually dissipates within 48 hours. Dr Hamilton will personally check you the day after the procedure and frequently over the first 2 weeks. Most patients are able to return to their normal routines about one week after the procedure; however, heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for several weeks.

A breast lift (mastopexy) can also be combined with other cosmetic procedures such as short scar facelift, rhinoplasty, or tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), for a comprehensive body makeover, although not in the same session. Patients undergoing a breast lift in Adelaide may also benefit from a combined breast reduction.
