Understanding the risks of plastic surgery

At Hamilton House, we are committed to providing exceptional care and achieving the best possible outcomes for our patients.

However, like all surgical procedures, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery carries inherent risks. It is important that you understand these risks before making any decisions about surgery.

This page outlines the general risks associated with plastic surgery, but please note that each procedure carries its own unique set of potential complications. These will be discussed in great detail during your consultation with Dr. Hamilton to ensure you are fully informed and prepared for the process.

General risks of surgery

While the majority of patients experience a smooth recovery, there are common risks associated with all surgical procedures. These may include, but are not limited to:

  • Bleeding: Some bleeding is normal during and after surgery, but excessive bleeding may require surgical intervention.
  • Infection: Any surgery involves a risk of infection, despite the use of strict sterilisation procedures nd compliance with Australian Standards AS 5369.
  • Scarring: Scarring is an inevitable part of surgery. While efforts are made to minimise visible scarring, the healing process varies from person to person.
  • Nerve Damage: Some procedures carry a small risk of nerve damage, which can result in numbness or tingling.
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis: Some procedures are associated with the rare risk of clots developing in the leg veins which can travel to the heart and lungs (embolus)
  • Anaesthesia Complications: General anaesthesia is generally safe, but there are some risks associated with its use, particularly for patients with certain medical conditions. Sedation is less risky and local anaesthesia carries almost zero risk.
  • Unfavourable Results: Although we strive for the best possible aesthetic outcomes, results may vary, and there is a possibility that you may not achieve the exact result you were expecting.

In this page Dr Richard Hamilton outlines the general risks associated with plastic surgery, but please note that each procedure carries its own unique set of potential complications. These will be discussed in detail during your consultation with Dr. Hamilton to ensure you are fully informed and prepared for the process.

Procedure specific risks

Each procedure carries its own set of risks, which we will go over with you in great detail during your consultation. Some potential risks associated with specific procedures include:

  • Breast Augmentation: Risks can include implant rupture, capsular contracture (hardening of the tissue around the implant), asymmetry, implant malposition or changes in breast sensation.
  • Facelift: Risks can include prolonged swelling, asymmetry, or nerve damage.
  • Liposuction: Risks include contour irregularities, skin loosening, or blood clots.

It’s important to express and discuss any concerns you may have with Dr. Hamilton, as your health, medical history, and lifestyle all play a role in your risk profile.

Consultation: Your Opportunity to Understand Risks

The consultation process is essential to understanding both the benefits and risks of your desired procedure. Dr. Hamilton will take the time to review your medical history, discuss your expectations, and assess your suitability for surgery. He will also provide you with a clear understanding of the potential risks, ensuring you are informed every step of the way.

Your consultation is an opportunity to ask questions, voice any concerns, and get a personalised risk assessment tailored to your unique circumstances.

Results are not guaranteed

While Dr. Hamilton and his team will do everything possible to ensure the best results, it is important to note that surgical outcomes are not guaranteed. Results can vary from person to person, depending on factors such as skin elasticity, healing, scar tendency and individual health. No procedure is without risk, and it is essential to have realistic expectations about the results.

AHPRA Compliance

This page and the information provided are in compliance with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) guidelines. We are committed to ensuring that our patients receive clear, complete, accurate, and balanced information so they can make informed decisions about their care.
