Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty at Our Adelaide Practice in South Australia

Some women find the shape and size of their labia can cause discomfort when wearing tight fitting clothing and cause physical pain during physical activity or sexual intercourse.

Some women require labiaplasty surgery (the reduction of large protruding labia) to relieve everyday discomfort or pain associated with physical activity. Others desire labiaplasty for cosmetic reasons.

Dr Richard Hamilton has over 30 years experience in performing Labiaplasty at his Adelaide plastic surgery clinic. He uses a specialised technique which is designed to preserve the delicate sensitivity of the labia, as well as its colour, for a natural looking result.

Hamilton House offers expert labiaplasty procedures for women experiencing physical discomfort or cosmetic concerns related to labial size and shape. Under the care of Dr. Richard Hamilton, patients receive compassionate treatment.

The Labiaplasty Consultation

Preoperatively you will have an in depth consultation with Dr Hamilton in which you can discuss your concerns on an open and honest manner as Dr Hamilton will listen to you, so he fully understands your concerns. He will carry out a careful physical examination in the presence of and with the assistance one of our Registered nurses to ensure your comfort and confidentiality.

Having assessed the situation, he will discuss in detail the procedure and how he will be able to help. He will also mention risks and complications. Plenty of time will be allowed for any questions you may have so please allow about 1 hour for the consultation.

The Labiaplasty Procedure at Hamilton House

Labiaplasty surgery is carried out at Hamilton House under a sedation anaesthesia to ensure you are fully relaxed and comfortable. Preoperatively anaesthetic cream is applied. Dr Hamilton carefully reduces the size of the labia minora by the modified wedge reduction technique as taught to him by Labiaplasty surgeon Dr Gary Alter. Surgical judgement is required to reduce the labia by just the right amount no more and no less. The labia are reconstructed by suturing in 3 layers with very fine sutures some of which are self-dissolving. Local anaesthetic is applied to make the post-operative period more comfortable.

In conjunction with a labiaplasty some patients desire a reduction of the clitoral hood. Again, this requires surgical judgement to avoid any complications such as altered sensitivity or alteration of the anatomy.

Recovery after Labiaplasty Surgery

A simple pad like dressing is applied to the area which is retained by your underpants to absorb any discharge. We will give you a supply of dressings to use over the following days. We advise taking a shower in the morning following the labiaplasty and you may wash the area carefully with a neutral liquid soap preparation. Dr Hamilton will personally check you on the first post-operative day with his nurse in attendance. Expect some bruising and swelling to the operation site and possibly adjacent areas, but it will normally settle in a few days. Dr Hamilton will personally check you at 1 week and at 2 weeks after the procedure always with his nurse in attendance and the final check is at 6 weeks.

You can resume most normal activities after a couple of days, the gym at 4 weeks and sexual activity at approximately 6 weeks after the operation.

Please note that the information about procedures here is given as a general guide, and is not a substitute for an in depth, personal consultation with Dr. Hamilton. As with any surgery there are risks and complications to consider, all of which will be clearly communicated to you during your one on one consultation with Dr. Hamilton.
