The first use of a Microvascular Free Abdominoplasty DIEP Flap in Breast Reconstruction

Last year marked the 40th anniversary of the first use of a microvascular free abdominoplasty DIEP flap used in breast reconstruction.

The real story of this pioneering surgery has been hidden for decades.

Dr Richard Hamilton, who was involved in both the research and surgery at the time, is correcting history by acknowledging the ground-breaking work done in Australia and Sweden, particularly by Dr Ingemar Fogdestam.

Following an article in Australasian Journal of Plastic Surgery on The Free Abdominoplasty Flap in Breast Reconstruction – The Untold Story, Dr Hamilton recently had it made into a film which he presented to the College of Surgeons Annual Scientific Meeting in Melbourne, where it was greeted with acclaim.

The story has since been taken up quite a lot, including:

  • The New Zealand Association of  Plastic Surgeons Meeting
  • The Swedish Plastic Meeting in southern Sweden
  • The International ISAPS Plastic Meeting in Vienna
  • The Australian ASAPS Meeting
  • The American Society of Plastic Surgeons ASPS
