Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty at our Adelaide, South Australia Clinic

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure suited to patients who find that fat which does not respond to healthy diet changes and increased physical activity may be readily eliminated through an abdominoplasty. This procedure is among the most common and effective cosmetic treatment and is available to patients to remove or reduce unwanted body fat or loose skin.

Dr Richard Hamilton can remove excess abdominal skin, as well as remove subcutaneous abdominal fat deposits, to give you a firmer, shapelier appearance. Please note Dr Hamilton performs small to medium abdominoplasty procedures only and, within the day surgery facility, he is not able to offer services related to massive weight loss.

Also, note Medicare have revised the item numbers for Abdominoplasty in the Medical Benefits Schedule and the Hospital funds have followed suit, so unfortunately there are now fewer rebates available for this procedure.

Abdominoplasty

Despite regular abdominal exercises, some people find it impossible to lose excess fat and skin from their midsection. Performed by our cosmetic plastic surgeon, Dr Richard Hamilton in Adelaide South Australia, an abdominoplasty is a designed to give you a tighter, more defined abdominal area. Abdominoplasty may ensure a flatter midsection and it can reduce your waistline and firm your abs (abdominal muscles).

Am I A Good Candidate for an Abdominoplasty?

The best candidates for Abdominoplasty surgery are within 10-15% of their ideal body weight. Many candidates may carry a lot of fatty tissue intra-abdominally which cannot be addressed by abdominoplasty surgery. The only way to remove intra-abdominal fatty tissue is by conventional weight loss, diet and exercise.

Candidates for abdominoplasty surgery with a normal Body Index Mass need to be in as good a physical condition as possible before electing to undergo the surgery.

Candidates in good health will most likely face a lower risk of anaesthetic complications and heal faster than candidates carrying extra fatty tissue.

Abdominoplasty surgery

An incision is made in the lower abdomen from one hip to the other and the abdominal wall is initially contoured by an abdominal tuck procedure. Skin and subcutaneous fat is separated from the abdominal muscles which are then tightened by internal sutures, to narrow the waistline and flatten the midsection. Skin is folded down and excess skin is removed. Lastly, the umbilicus (belly button) is repositioned, a tube drain is inserted, and the incision is closed by stiches. The procedure takes between 2 and 3 hours, depending on how extensive the surgery is.

Recovery after Abdominoplasty

After undergoing abdominoplasty surgery at our Adelaide, South Australia practice, patients experience some bruising and swelling which typically subsides within 10 days. Mobilisation / walking is essential immediately following surgery to reduce complications such as deep venous thrombosis (DVT). Light activities can generally be progressively resumed the day after surgery. Scarring resulting from the procedure fades with the passage of time. To maintain our strict safety standards, patients with a Body Mass Index greater than 28 and massive weight loss patients are NOT suitable for abdominoplasty operation at Hamilton House Day Surgery.
