Breast Implants Information

Breast implants together with great surgical skill are the main components of a breast enlargement. At our Adelaide, South Australia practice, Dr. Richard Hamilton utilizes either saline-filled or silicone gel filled implants for Breast Augmentation procedures. Saline is essentially a salt-water solution that is contained within an outer silicone rubber shell. It is easily absorbed by the body in the case of implant leakage. Both saline and gel-filled breast implants are equally safe, and the latest technological advances in breast implants have further increased their effectiveness and durability. Dr. Hamilton will guide you through the process of choosing between saline or silicone breast implants at the initial consultation if you don’t have a particular preference.

Breast Implant Sizes

Saline and silicone breast implants come in a range of sizes, from smaller implants designed for subtle breast enlargement to larger styles tailored for patients who desire more dramatic results. Dr. Hamilton will assist you to select the best implant fit the shape of every patients’ specific body contour.

With the many advantages of breast implants, however, there also come some risks and complications. Broadly speaking silicone gel implants are better where the soft tissue coverage is thin and saline filled implants are preferred where there is more generous soft tissue cover.

Dr. Hamilton will discuss with you all the risks and benefits of the various types of breast implants utilized at our South Australia practice in Adelaide. He will also go over the best options for exact placement of the breast implants, as they can be inserted either behind the chest muscles or directly underneath the breast tissue.

The Breast Enlargement Procedure

Breast enlargement through the placement of implants can be performed at our South Australia facility in Adelaide as a day surgery procedure. During the surgery, an incision is made under the breast, around the nipple, or under the arm, and a saline or silicone gel filled implant is carefully inserted under the breast tissue or pectoral muscles. Once the implant is correctly in place, the incision is carefully closed with a concealed stitch. The procedure is performed under intravenous sedation or under general anaesthesia and takes at least two hours to complete.

Recovery after Breast Enlargement

During recovery, patients typically experience breast sensitivity, soreness, swelling, and sometimes a temporary decrease in nipple sensation. However, most side effects subside quickly as the breasts settle down (usually within two days ). Post-operative discomfort can be relieved with our special post-op breast enlargement pain management plan which includes local anaesthetic just before the operation concludes, oral medication and a nasal spray analgaesic for a quick effect. Most patients who have undergone breast enlargement at our Adelaide, South Australia plastic surgery center are able to resume their normal, daily routines, including work, around two weeks after the breast augmentation procedure, sometimes less. The post-management is different for silicone gel and saline breast implants. Dr. Hamilton will discuss this with you at the initial consultation at Hamilton House.

Possible Breast Enlargement Complications

In addition to sensitivity, soreness, temporarily decreased nipple sensation, and swelling, there are some instances when an implant will become encapsulated, a condition in which scar tissue forms around the implant and makes it feel hardened. Rarely, the implant may leak and deflate, after which it would require replacement or removal. Dr. Hamilton will discuss all of the aspects of recovery, risks and complications from breast enlargement with you in a frank and open manner before the procedure so you are fully informed.
